They also house large amounts of myoglobin (a protein that stores oxygen) and contain numerous blood capillaries and mitochondria, which make them very resistant to fatigue. Slow-twitch fibres contract slowly and produce large amounts of energy to enable them to keep going for a long time. Skeletal, voluntary muscle mainly consists of two types of fibres – slow-twitch (type 1) and fast-twitch (type 2).
